Dr. Ira Byock

Ira Byock, MD, FAAHPM is a pioneering palliative care physician, author, and advocate for improving care through the end of life. Dr. Byock founded and serves as Chief Medical Officer of the Institute for Human Caring of Providence St. Joseph Health system with offices in Los Angeles, California. The Institute seeks to make whole person care routine for people at every age and stage of life. He is an active emeritus Professor of Medicine and Community & Family Medicine at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine.

 

His essays have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal among other national venues. He has been featured CBS 60 Minutes, PBS News Hour, and National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, Talk of the Nation, and On Being. His books include Dying Well, The Four Things That Matter Most, and The Best Care Possible.
